How AI Sharpens a Blurred Text Image

The tool uses Topaz Text Refine through fal.ai to improve letter edges and reduce compression artifacts. Text images keep their original resolution before processing, preserving the small details in screenshots and scans. Smaller images are enlarged up to four times; larger pages use a lower scale to keep the output within 24 megapixels. Crop to the words you need if your file exceeds the input limits.

It improves most when letters are only slightly soft from a small focus miss, when compression has left blocks around small type in a screenshot, or when a scan is just a little too low in resolution. It improves least when writing is smeared by motion or when characters are only a few pixels tall, because too little is left to work with.

It is not OCR. You get back a clearer picture, not editable text. If you need to copy or search the words, run the improved image through an OCR app afterwards; sharper strokes usually make OCR more accurate too.

Good results have even stroke widths and clear gaps between letters. If characters merge, change shape or look hand-drawn, trust the original instead.

Consistent text across the image

The same letter should look the same everywhere on the page. Two different versions of one word are a sign the detail was guessed.

Why Some Blurred Text Images Stay Unreadable

Some images simply do not have enough information left. Text only a few pixels tall cannot be rebuilt, because each letter is just a smudge of two or three colors. Heavy motion blur smears lines of text into each other, and strong JPEG compression replaces fine strokes with blocks.
